What’s Happening in Week 10

Inquiry learning intention: 

"How message can be relayed and received through different forms of expression" We are exploring how stories can be expressed. The whole year one neighbourhood is involved in a collaboration to create a movie. Currently we are developing storyboards and scripts.

Numeracy learning intentions: 
Children are developing their skills in understanding, problem solving and reasoning. Children will be exploring mathematics in stories and representing some of their own.

Literacy learning experiences: 

·      Narrative Writing – children are writing their own stories based on their experiences

·      Big Books that the children would have read or will be reading (Weeks 10-11)

o   What on Earth

Seed Project

As part of our inquiry we have been exploring How messages can be relayed in different ways. The children have been creating a whole neighbourhood story which we are developing into a movie. The children have been writing imaginative and personal stories. 

We are also looking at in-cooperating stories about the natural world and our focus will be on growing seeds. Next term the children may wish to write a story about a seed. In the next three weeks the children will be involved in observing and documenting how seeds grow.

Through the 'Seed Project' we will be exploring:-

·         The nature of living things

·         Sequencing the life pattern of plants

·         Building and extending student science capacity by introducing new words.

We started by reading the story The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.

 We asked the children to tell us:-  How plants grow? and What do they need to grow? Their responses can be found in our neighbourhood.

The children started the process of growing seeds in our neighbourhood.

We needed a dish, cotton wool, seeds and water to start the process.

The children documented their observations

We are also conducting controlled experiments.

Well-being in the Year One Neighbourhood

Over the past 5 weeks the children have been participating in weekly mediation session during well-being time. The meditation session are run through the Smiling Mind Education program. 

These session aim to develop the follow areas:

·  To provide  a preemptive and proactive tool to enhance mental health and well-being

·  To arm students with the skills to better manage stress and build resilience

·  To encourage participants to feel calm, clear and content.

What's Happening in Week 8

"Why do we share stories?" We will continue to look at how we share stories and will be working in our project groups during learning agreement.

Numeracy learning intentions:

Reading, comparing, ordering and locating two and three digit numbers. (Making large numbers and counting in tens)

Literacy learning experiences:

A graphic designer visiting our neighbourhood today

 

Today Otto's dad, Ben, came to our neighbourhood to talk about his work.  He is a graphic designer and has been involved in a variety of very interesting projects.

Ben came along to talk about what he does and to help us bring to life the characters (Max Winston, Book Man, Hipster the tiny flying whale and Spludge the pig)  for our whole neighbourhood story to life.

Ben used the children's drawings and the shapes they created to develop each character.

The children were very pleased with the drawings.
We went back to the drawing board in our groups to discuss and give feedback to Ben of any changes we want to include.

 

We were so happy that Ben helped us move our projects along.

The Movie Project so far!
We have been working on conceptual drawings, story writing and story boarding. The next stage of the project will include setting designs and creating 3D characters.

National Simultaneous Storytime Day

Yesterday the Year 1 neighbourhood participated in National Simultaneous Storytime day. National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 15th successful year it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book. 

Meredith our resident Teacher Candidate from Melbourne University, read the chosen story for this year 'The Brothers Quibble' by Aaron Blabey. 

Assembly

The Year One Neighbourhood will be presenting our learning at assembly tomorrow, Friday 29th May, at 3.00pm.

The children will also be singing. Join us at the school gym. We look forward to seeing there.
