Literacy - Week 1

The children have been introduced to two Aesop fables

and the tale of The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen.

We have been exploring cultural stories and the lessons that fables can teach us.  As part of our word study the children were able to generate 'able' words.

Cultural Stories

Mayatili (Jacob's mum) invited to school her brother, Mawalan and newphew Jeremiah. Jeremiah showed us how the 'yidaki' (traditional name for a digireedoo from the Yolngu culture from North East Arnhem Land).  Cultural stories from the Yolngu culture are told through the playing of the 'yeraki'.
Mawalan showed us some his paintings that he had creating.  One of his painting depicted the morning star and the other showed the sun rising.
We would like to thank Mayatili, Mawalan and Jeremiah so much for coming today and sharing their cultural heritage.

Numeracy update: Week 1

This week, the students have been exploring subtraction during numeracy targets. Students use stories to help understand subtraction concepts and solve problems. Students also continue to consolidate their understanding of 'number sentences' (e.g. 44-18=26), practicing how to say, read and write these using the correct symbols. The students were able to show these understanding using 'think boards' which can be found in their maths books. Some examples of these are also found on the wall in the Maths Taurus in the junior school hall. Please ask Tomo if you have any question regarding this.

Here are some photos showing students during the numeracy targets.

Inquiry Update: Movie Making Week 1

During week 1, the movie making group engaged in a wide variety of learning to prepare for the shooting of the animation.

Children researched words in the dictionary for the illustrations in the encyclopaedia.

We constructed and painted the scenery for the encyclopaedia scenes.

We completed some of the characters in the scene...

and the eyes and mouth for the main characters

Book covers for the characters had to be made.

Here, the children are designing the possible book covers for the 4 main characters.

We have been granted permission to film within the media studio in the school as soon as we are ready. We also have the deadline of Friday 11th December when we will be presenting the movie at assembly (hopefully!!!) We still require parental help during inquiry times and workshops on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please talk to Tomo for any information.

Visual Art: Term 4 News and Request

Image result for aleks danko art

This term in Visual Art students will explore the work of Aleks Danko and Melinda Harper. Aleks Danko has a forthcoming exhibition at Heide Museum of Modern Art and Melinda Harper has an exhibition currently showing there. In the beginning of the term, students will have the opportunity to design and print a comic interpretation of their own portrait, based on the work of Aleks Danko. Every student will be given a square of calico to print on, but they also have the opportunity to bring in a white T-shirt, calico bag or pillow case from home to print on as well. These should be bought in as soon as possible and I have advised students to keep them in their lockers until needed. If students do not want to bring in an item from home to print on, they will be given other opportunities to further develop their textile skills on the calico print.
Many thanks or all your help with this request, Hannah Rother-Gelder
Visual Art Co-Ordinator
