What's Happening in Week 8

Inquiry learning intention:

"Why do we share stories?" We will continue to look at how we share stories and will be working in our project groups during learning agreement.

Numeracy learning intentions:

Reading, comparing, ordering and locating two and three digit numbers. (Making large numbers and counting in tens)

Literacy learning experiences:

• Narrative Writing – children are writing their own stories based on their own experiences.

STUDENTS ARE TO BE PICKED UP FROM THE YEAR ONE NEIGHBOURHOOD AT 3:30PM

A graphic designer visiting our neighbourhood today

 

Today Otto's dad, Ben, came to our neighbourhood to talk about his work.  He is a graphic designer and has been involved in a variety of very interesting projects.

Ben came along to talk about what he does and to help us bring to life the characters (Max Winston, Book Man, Hipster the tiny flying whale and Spludge the pig)  for our whole neighbourhood story to life.

Ben used the children's drawings and the shapes they created to develop each character.

The children were very pleased with the drawings.
We went back to the drawing board in our groups to discuss and give feedback to Ben of any changes we want to include.

 

We were so happy that Ben helped us move our projects along.

The Movie Project so far!
We have been working on conceptual drawings, story writing and story boarding. The next stage of the project will include setting designs and creating 3D characters.

National Simultaneous Storytime Day

Yesterday the Year 1 neighbourhood participated in National Simultaneous Storytime day. National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 15th successful year it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book. 

Meredith our resident Teacher Candidate from Melbourne University, read the chosen story for this year 'The Brothers Quibble' by Aaron Blabey. 

Assembly

The Year One Neighbourhood will be presenting our learning at assembly tomorrow, Friday 29th May, at 3.00pm.

The children will also be singing. Join us at the school gym. We look forward to seeing there. 

Walkathon

Just a friendly reminder to parents, that money for the walkathon is now being collected.

A pizza party is up for grabs for the home-group who brings their money in first!

Premiers' Reading Challenge

The Premiers' Reading Challenge is upon us once again!

Children and parents can collect forms from Room 14 (ask Sia).

Your child can select books from a level list. The online system allows a student to select any book from the book list, regardless of the year level to which it has been allocated. It is then up to your child's teacher or school Challenge coordinator to approve, through online verification, their reading list as appropriate and challenging.

Rules for school and student Challengers

• Students must register as a Challenger and keep a record of their reading on the Challenge website.
• Students must read a set number of books during the Challenge:

Year level	Number of books	Number from the Challenge book list
Prep – Year 2	30 books	20 or more

• Students' online books must be verified as read by a coordinator in at school.
• All information must be completed online before 14 September 2015.

Prep, Year 1 or Year 2

If children are in Prep, Year 1 or Year 2 they can read books by themselves or with someone else, for example, a parent, teacher, brother or sister, classmate, buddy or friend. This support is important if they are just learning to read.

Walkathon

We were very lucky the weather held out!

The children were incredibly excited to take part in the Walkathon. 

Thank you to all the parents who assisted on the day to set up and distribute muffins and fruit.
